Medicare and Prescription Costs “Extra Help”
Jan 18th, 2010 by admin
The following is a message from the Social Security Administration which may be helpful if you need assistance with your prescriptions:
It’s Easier Than Ever to Save on Your Prescription Costs
Some Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for Extra Help to pay for the costs — monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments — related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. The Extra Help is worth an average of $3,900 per year. To qualify, a person must be a Medicare beneficiary, have limited income and resources, and reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia.
Starting on January 1, 2010, changes in the law make it easier for some people to qualify for the Extra Help. Under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act, Social Security:
- Will no longer count as a resource any life insurance policy; and
- Will no longer count as income any help received regularly from someone else to pay an individual’s household expenses — food, mortgage, rent, heating fuel or gas, electricity, water, and property taxes.
